  All balloons now days are made from latex... which is actually produced from the rubber tree. Because it’s natural, it breaks down with sunlight and water. The most pollution that it would create would be during the production process. How else would environmentalists conduct their campaign? Paper?- factories are still producing waste, Internet?- again, energy is used and pollution is ultimately created...
  I think it is a pretty clever way to convey their message and it obviously got a lot of attention.

  Oil is natural too. Go stick a balloon outside and see how long it will take to break down. Hey my McDonald's bag and wrappers are natural paper too, does that mean I can throw them out the window?

  A wise friend once told me... the solution to pollution is dilution. So I am pretty sure that it is ok to throw your McDonalds bag out the window-- just don't do it all the time.
  
  But really~ I think we are arguing about two separate things... pollution to the environment and eye pollution. Sure, it would be horrible for everyone to throw their "natural" garbage on the side of the road, but in the long run, it really is the same thing as localizing garbage at the dumps. I am not saying that garbage lain streets is ideal, but you see my point.
